BME: Trading volume on the Spanish Exchange reached €82.78 bn in May on 3.4 million trades

    Equities

    To May trading in Equities on the Spanish Stock Exchange amounted to €411.53bn, down 8% compared to the same period in 2010. The trading volume in May came in at €82.78bn, which was up 1.3% on the previous month but down 29.9% from the same period a year earlier. May 2010 was a historical month in terms of trading volume and volatility due to the situation in Europe and in the financial sector.

    The number of trades to May was 19.9 million, up 15.7% year on year. The number of trades in May came in at 3.4 million, down 21.9% from the same month in 2010.

    The trading volume posted by the ETF segment to May was 59% down on the same period in 2010, at €1.47bn. The trading volume in May in this segment was €231 million. In the first five months of the year the number of ETF trades totalled 19,239, down 42% year on year. The number of trades on the ETF segment in May came in at 2,754.

    Futures and Options

    In May trading on BME’s Derivatives Market, MEFF, came in at 4.3 million contracts. The trading volume in the first five months totalled 27.3 million contracts, up 2.4% year on year.

    Highlights include the trading in Futures on Stocks, which in May came in at 1.2 million contracts, up 73.2% from the same month in 2010. The trading volume in this product to the end of May totalled 10.8 million contracts, up 92.1% year-on-year.

    Warrants and Certificates

    The volume of warrants admitted to trading between January and May was 3,065.

    Trading volume to May on the warrants and certificates market totalled €669 million, down 3.5% from the same period last year. In May the trading volume came in at €99.3 million, down 57% year on year.

    The number of trades to May reached 125,443 million, down 23% from the same period in 2010. In May 20,868 trades were executed, down 59% compared to May of 2010.

    Corporate Debt

    Corporate Debt trading in May reached €405.20bn, up 55.2% year on year. The trading volume for the first five years totalled €2.6 trillion, up 148.3% on the same period last year.

    New issues in May totalled €30.02bn, up 147.2% from the same month last year. In the first five months of the year the number of issues totalled €127.57bn, up 38.3% from the same period in 2010. The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of May was up 1.1% from the same period a year earlier, at €864.60bn.

    The trading volume on BME’s Public Debt market in May came in at €10.27bn, down 51.6 % from the same period a year earlier, although at-maturity trading increased by 117.3%. The trading volume for the first five months totalled €44.32bn, down 52.3% year-on-year.
