  • The trading volume in the Derivatives Market, MEFF, came in at 19.33 million contracts in the first quarter, up 13% year-on-year
  • Trading on the Corporate Debt Market, AIAF, in the first quarter was triple that posted from January to March 2010

Equities

The Equity trading volume on the Spanish stock exchange in March amounted to €81.73bn, which represents a 25% increase from the same period in 2010. The trading volume in the first quarter totalled €246.97bn, up 8% from the same period a year earlier.

The number of share trades in March reached a monthly record high, at 4.6 million, up 46% from the same month in 2010. The number of trades in the first quarter reached a quarterly record high, at 12.9 million, up 37% from the same period in 2010.

The trading volume in the ETF segment in March totalled €366 million, down 4% year-on-year. The trading volume in the ETF segment to the end of March came in at €1.08bn, down 35% from the same period in 2010.

Futures and Options

In March trading on BME’s Derivatives Market, MEFF, came in at 8.75 million contracts, up 29.4% from the same period a year earlier. The trading volume in the first three months totalled 19.33 million contracts, up 13% year on year.

Highlights include the trading in Futures on Stocks, which in March came in at 4.53 million contracts, up 85.6% from the same month in 2010. The trading volume in this product to the end of March totalled 8 million contracts, up 93.7% year-on-year.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants issued in the first two months of the year came in at 1,547.

The trading volume on the warrants and certificates market to March totalled €470 million, up 37% from 2010. In March the trading volume in this segment came in at €168 million, up 42% from March 2010.

The number of trades in this segment to March was 86,624, up 3.1% from the same month a year earlier. In March the number of trades was 31,421, up 10.2% from the same period the previous year.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading in March reached €605.57bn, up 186.7% year on year and the figure for the first three months of the year was triple that for the first three months of 2010, at 1.82 trillion, up 219.1% year-on-year.

New issues in March was up 44.3% on the previous year, at €26.91bn, the highest figure in the last 20 months. In the first three months of the year the number of issues totalled €70.79bn, up 25.1% from the same period in 2010.

The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of March was €854.96 bn, down 1.3% from the same period a year earlier.

The trading volume on BME’s Public Debt market in March came in at €11.57bn, down 45 % from the same period a year earlier. The figure for the first three months totalled €26.87bn, up 27.6% year-on-year.
